Volkswagen Restores Annie the Beetle, a 1967 Model with 350,000 Miles
Few vehicle owners can say their car has 350,000 miles on the odometer. Kathleen Brooks, the owner of a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, can confidently make such a statement, though. Brooks first bought her VW Beetle in 1966 when she was living in Riverside, California, and she’s been driving it ever since. First making headlines after local news sources learned that Brooks was celebrating the 50-year anniversary of her first vehicle purchase, this is one Beetle that proves VW is a dependable brand. Brooks named the car “Annie the Beetle.”
Annie the Beetle has a white vinyl interior, an upgraded exhaust, and a bright Ruby Red exterior. Under the hood is a 53-horsepower engine, which has been more than enough power to drive her around for 50 years. According to Volkswagen, the brand celebrated the special relationship between Brooks and her Beetle by offering to restore the car at its original factory in Puebla, Mexico.
So why did Brooks stick with this car for so long? “Part of it was practical . . . I need transportation and she’s my transportation,” says Brooks, now 73. “But as time went on, I mean—having a car 30 years, 40 years, 51 years almost! There’s no way I could let her go, in any way shape or form. She’s not like a part of me, she’s an extension of me.”
